#053 IJN No.13 Sub-chaser
IJN No.13 class submarine chaser 第十三号型駆潜艇 on a quiet island patrol.
Notes
No.13 (第十三号型駆潜艇) was a class of submarine chasers of the Imperial Japanese Navy serving during and after World War II.
The Kit
I picked up the 1:700 Tamiya 31903 Gato Class & Japanese Submarine Chaser No.13 kit at the “kits for Kids” charity event for SGD$10. A very nice price given that the kit actually includes 4 models:
- 2 x gato-class subs; can be built with full hull or waterline
- 2 x No.13; waterline
Paint Scheme
Oops, didn’t keep track of my paints this time…

Build Log
Pimping the IJN No.13 Sub Chaser 第十三号型駆潜艇 with some “found” PE and brass rod.
I only used one of the No.13 ships for this diorama, but the gato-class subs got primed at the same time;-)
Painting the details
Mocking up the diorama..
Seabed is painted foil with some foliage sealed with gloss mod podge.
The resin pour has cured but lesson learned: not a good idea to encase the ship in the resin. Aside from the meniscus, the OPR on the hull seems to have leached into the resin producing a tide mark
Some final shots of the diorama:
Added some final touches and obligatory matchstick.
